KUNISADA II: THE TALE OF GENJI
Kunidada II (1823-1880) ws the leading student of the first Kunisada. His early work was signed Baido Kunimasa III. In 1846 (two years after Kunisada I became the head of the Utagawa school signing his name Toyokuni III), Kunisada II married his master’s eldest daughter and began signing his prints Kunisada II. He again changed his name in 1864, after his master’s death, to Toyokuni IV.
Kunisada II is best known for his prints of beautiful women and historical subjects. He did a number of very popular series illustrating the famous Tale of Genji, which is based on the novel by Murasaki Shikibu, a tenth/ eleventh century poetess, and depicited the life and romances of Prince Genji.
