    THE 47 RONIN BY KUNIYOSHI: Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) will always be remembered as Japan's greatest master of legendary and historical prints. One of his most famous and sought after series is BIOGRAPHIES OF THE LOYAL RETAINERS or as it is also known THE 47 RONIN. The celebrated story of the 47 Ronin is based on real incidents and has been performed on stage and illustrated since its occurrence shortly after the turn of the 18th century. The prints date to 1857 and each design depicts a beautiful woman in a variety of everyday poses. The prints are unique as they are in pristine condition.

     

    >> TOSHI YOSHIDA WOODBLOCK PRINTS: Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995),the son of Hiroshi Yoshida, ranks amongst Japan’s foremost 20th century woodblock artists. Internationally honored, Yoshida’s work resides in the collections of many of the world’s leading art museums.     >> YOSHIIKU: 36 BEAUTIES AND 36 RESTURANTS : YOSHIIKU (1833-1904) was a popular ukiyo-e print maker and newspaper illustrator during the Meiji period. He was a student of Kuniyoshi and a rival of the famed Yoshitoshi. He grew up the son of a tea house proprietor, hence his success in portraying beauties from various teahouses and restaurants.

    >> SHUNGA: THE EROTIC PRINTS OF JAPAN: Shunga or as literally translated “Spring Pictures” are a genre of woodblock prints that depict the entire gamut of sensual and sexual pleasures. Many of the subjects are very unique. Some of the artists represented are Eisho, Utamaro, Koryusai, Hokusai, Eizan, Eisen and Kunisada. (Please note that many of the pictures are sexually explicit.)

     

    >> NISHIJIMA: Ronin Gallery is pleased to present 10 woodblock prints depicting brightly colored umbrellas by Katsuyuki Nishijima (1945- ). His work portrays the romantic more traditional side of Japan. His mastery of intriguing angles and the intricate play of light and color in his prints distinguish him as one of Japan’s most popular contemporary woodblock print artist.

     

    >> HIROSHIGE: The Ronin Gallery is pleased to present a special online exhibition of Hiroshige’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido (koban format). Hiroshige did numerous series portraying the stations along the Tokaido Road, which ran from the Shoguns capitol of Edo to the Imperial capitol of Kyoto, and it is considered the most popular landscape subject in ukiyo-e. The prints where published in 1842.

Taking its name from the port where it was first exported, Imari porcelain has a rich history that has fascinated connoisseurs through the centuries. Yoshida is one of the best known Japanese landscape artists of the early 20th century. His work is highly sort after and collected internationally. He was attracted to the calmer aspects of nature and his prints exude coolness, invite meditation and set a soft peaceful mood.

Brilliant and sensitive, playful and intimate, the illustrations from this album published by Tsutaya Jusaburo are universally considered one of the hallmarks of woodblock printing. A compilation of 15 double page designs with accompanying humorous verses, they portray an array of crawling and flying insects, reptiles, flowers and fruits. A lover of nature from childhood Utamaro based these realistic designs on his observations from the garden. Softly colored and exquisitely rendered with an elegant arrangement of space, each of these gem-like pictures is a tribute to Utamaro's genius as an artist.

     

    >> 19th CENTURY TRIPTYCHS: Ronin Gallery is pleased to present a collection of twenty-seven 19th Century Japanese Woodblock Print Triptychs portraying warriors, courtesans and kabuki actors. Some of the artists represented are Kuniyoshi, Toyokuni III, Kunichika, and Yoshitoshi. Triptychs are made up of three prints which constitute one unified design. Because in most cases each woodblock print could stand on its own artistic merit, they were often broken up and sold by the individual print. Today complete triptychs are scarce.

The art of bamboo weaving is among the oldest and most outstanding craft of Japan. Most of the baskets were made expressly for flower arrangement and basket sculpture but some had more utilitarian functions such carrying fruits and vegetables.
