THE BEAUTY AND THE ACTOR

THE BEAUTY AND THE ACTOR:

The early 20th century was characterized by a rebirth in the Japanese woodblock print movement. Japanese artists discovered that the Impressionists and Post Impressionists were captivated and inspired by the ukiyo-e masters. The world wide reputation that ukiyo-e attained paved the way for Japanese print artists to create works with the same dignity, perfection and genius as the masters of the Golden Age. The prints of this period have an immediate appeal that rests on the classical virtues of delicacy, poise and restraint.

HIROSHIGE: Celebrated Views of the Eastern Capital

The prints, dating from the 1840’s, depict life in and around Edo or today’s Tokyo, literally translated as Eastern Capital. They show the vibrant atmosphere that surrounded the city in every conceivable condition: in moonlight, during rain, snow, spring and summer. They are a wonderful view of a time gone by, of a place for all seasons, an image of a floating world.
