KUNICHIKA: Master of the Kabuki Print.

The Ronin Gallery is pleased to present a collection of 36 woodblock prints by the master Meiji artist TOYOHARA KUNICHIKA (1835-1900). One of the last great ukiyo-e artists he was a debaucher, womanizer and man of questionable personal conduct. Passionate about the Kabuki theater he was a regular backstage visitor spending hours sketching theatrical scenes and portraits of the actors. It is reported that a close friend wrote about him ‘Print designing, theater and drinking were his life and for him that was enough.’

OSAKA THEATRICAL PRINTS by Yoshitaki

The Ronin Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of woodblock prints by Yoshitaki (1841-1899), a leading 19th century Osaka artist. Osaka prints almost exclusively illustrated the Kabuki theater and its actors. They are distinguished by the very high quality of printing techniques used as well as for the lacquers, embossing and metallic pigments such as gold, silver and copper that are applied. The brilliant colors, dramatic compositions and deluxe quality give Osaka art a unique position in the world of Ukiyo-e.

TSUBA 16th thru 19th century Japanese Sword Guards for Father’s Day

TSUBA are sword guards which were used to protect the hand during combat. According to Japanese tradition, the purity, strength and resilience of the sword blade reflected the very soul of the samurai. Not surprisingly, the materials and workmanship that went into sword furnishings were of the highest possible quality. The size and visibility of the tsuba made them convenient vehicles for the ingenuity of Japanese metal smiths. Each piece is made from iron or copper with gold or silver inlay.
