KOZAKI KAN: OWLS and TRAVELING MONKS

Kozaki’s prints are lighthearted and fun. They juxtapose a rather simple, whimsical illustration of an owl, cat, frog or traveling monk with a humorous poem or verse. Kozaki Kan was born in 1942 in Kumamoto Prefecture. He graduated from the Pacific School of Art and in 1978 and 1979 won the grand prize at the Nichido Exhibition. He is very well known throughout Japan and Nagasaki has a museum devoted to his works. The prints are specially price for this exhibition from $120 to $250.

MEIJI SURIMONO: Traditional New Years Gifts

March 5th, 2010 · No Comments

MEIJI SURIMONO: Traditional New Years Gifts

Blending illustration and poetry, surimono were limited edition prints that were privately commissioned by wealthy merchants and poetry societies for special occasions such as the New Year. They were printed on thick paper with a lavish use of technical embellishments including silver, gold, bronze powder, lacquer and embossing. Sometime in the 1880’s publishers took the earlier surimono designs and printed them in a number of small edition sets. They were primarily sold to early Western travelers to Japan and like the original surimono were exquisitely printed with elaborate embellishments.
