The Customs of Women by Shuntei: Ronin Gallery is please to present 28 prints from the series The Customs of Women by Shuntei. The series, dating to 1897, depicts women and children at various leisure activities: boating on riverbanks, conversing on terraces, strolling through gardens, playing games, reading, writing, sewing and painting. Beautifully designed and delicately printed all of the designs are enhanced with silver, lacquer and embossing.

Miyagawa Shuntei (1873-1914) was born in Aichi prefecture and lived most of his life in Tokyo. His birth name was Watanabe Morikici. He signed his work Shuntei Gyoshi or Shuntei Kanjin which literally means “man of leisure”. He studied painting with Watanabe Shoka and Tomioka Eisen. He was a prolific designer for book and newspaper illustrations as well as woodblock prints. His finest work was in the genre of women and children. .
