TOSHI YOSHIDA: (1911-1995) was born in 1911 in Tokyo. Both his parents and grandparents were celebrated masters of Japan’s traditional art forms, and his entire life was dedicated to his art and the continuation of his family’s artistic legacy. From his earliest years he is said to have shown signs of exceptional talent and even his father, the renowned Hiroshi Yoshida, reportedly marveled at his sons’ outstanding creativity. As a boy Toshi learned much from watching the artisans in his father’s studio and when he was 14 he began to formally study art and attended the Taiheiyo Art School of the Pacific Arts Association where his father was a member of the faculty. At the age of 20, maturing rapidly as an artist in his own right, Toshi began making overseas trips to seek new material and traveled widely through America, Asia, Europe, Africa and Antarctica. His early work is extremely close to his father’s in style, after 1950 he began to branch out into abstract works also while still maintaining close ties to the traditional Japanese style landscape prints.
His haunting landscapes, luminous with color and suffused with an almost tangible atmospheric aura, are superbly controlled evocations of different moods and emotions. He ranks among Japan’s foremost 20th century artist. Having won international acclaim, his work resides in the permanent collections of the world’s leading museums.
