SADANOBU

Sadanobu III (1881-1963) descends from a family of ukiyo-e artists that have been popular since the Edo period. Born in Osaka he was trained by his father and grandfather. As a young man he also became a student of Ueda Kocho, a leading Shijo style painter, and Utagawa Sadamasu. Inspired by the culture of the "Floating World," Sadanobu III works with the traditional subject matter of kabuki actors, samurai and beautiful women. His son Sadanobu IV (1913 - ?) carries the family artist traditions. His primary subjects are children and cats.
