PICTURES OF 48 BIRDS by SUGAKUDO The Ronin Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of Sugakudo’s masterpiece series "Pictures of 48 Birds". These designs printed in 1859 are acclaimed for their realistic rendering of the natural world as well as their delicacy of color, fine embossing and high quality printing. They portray various birds and flowers of Japan during the four seasons. SUGAKUDO was a mid 19th century ukiyo-e artist. The exact dates of his birth and death are unknown but most of his work can be dated from 1850's to early 1860's. His full name was
Nakayama Sugakudo and he studied woodblock printing with Hiroshige. He is best known for his kacho (birds and flower) designs.
