The Ronin Gallery is pleased to present a special online exhibition of Hiroshige’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido (koban format). Hiroshige did numerous series portraying the stations along the Tokaido Road, which ran from the Shoguns capitol of Edo to the Imperial capitol of Kyoto, and it is considered the most popular landscape subject
in ukiyo-e. The prints where published by Aritaya from 1842-1845 and were originally printed on 14 sheets with 4 subjects per sheet. This particular series has 56 designs rather than the usual 55 which portray the 53 resting stations and the starting point in Edo and the arrival in Kyoto.
