Yoshitsuya (1822-1866) was born in Edo. He was a student of Kuniyoshi and excelled in prints depicting fierce warriors and legendary battle scenes. Like his teacher Kuniyoshi, Yoshistuya was popular amongst the Edo populous and well known for his tattoo designs. In the series The 54 Battle Stories of Hideyoshi (1536-1598) we can see Yoshitsuya's mastery of captivating composition, attention to detail, and use of vibrant color. Hideyoshi was a military and political genius who succeeded in uniting the country and bring an end to the turbulence of 16th century feudal Japan. Each of these prints depicits a different battle scene. They are all in excellent condition.
